Life at Sea: What to know about the 3-year cruise around the world, now canceled.

The Life at Sea cruise (owned by Miray Cruises) was a three year voyage planned for 2023. On November 1st the cruise ship was supposed to depart from Istanbul, claiming to be the longest cruise yet. The trip was planned to last over 1,000 days and have nearly 400 port calls. The journey across the sea would have been an unprecedented global travel experience. This price included accommodations and food for the full length of the trip. This journey was supposed to top the longest cruise to date, The Ultimate World Cruise by Royal Caribbean.
Unfortunately, the 2023 cruise was canceled shortly before it was supposed to begin. The cancellation was due to the cruise company not being properly prepared to begin the voyage. The cruise ship for the long voyage had not been acquired due to a lack of funds. Passengers could not be properly accommodated because the cruise company did not possess a large enough vessel. Sadly, many travelers had already arrived at the departure location by time the cruise was officially canceled. The decision to cancel the cruise was received by potential passengers as devastating and upsetting news, understandably.
Cruise, Live and Explore the World from your Home at Sea
But cruise company Life at Sea recently told customers who bought passage on a three-year voyage that rather than visiting 140 countries, their trip was called off. On this sea cruise, you will visit 23 destinations including ancient temples and vibrant cities in northern Asia. Stops in Tokyo, Seoul, Jeju Island, and Shanghai give plenty of time to explore over 70 days. This ultimate bucket list cruise will take passengers to South America and Antarctica visiting 11 countries in 98 days.

The sudden change of plans severely inconvenienced many travelers and negatively impacted the cruise line. Surprisingly, Miray is already advertising another cruise that is set to depart in November of 2024. Extended journeys on the water can surely provide unique travel experiences. Around the world cruise trips provide jam-packed itineraries, distinct cultural immersion, luxury accommodations, specialty cuisine and immersive port activities. These cruises are ideal for travelers who want to hop around different countries and parts of the world. But the primary criteria for passengers of extended world cruises are those that have lots of time and money.
But in late November, after months of behind-the-scenes chaos, the Youssefs were stuck in Istanbul, with the cruise company canceling the trip. The ship will feature eight decks that will house three restaurants, a communal kitchen, a large pool with four Jacuzzis, a business center, and space for entertainment. The MV Gemini cruise ship was scheduled to set sail on November 30, with the original departure date having been rescheduled several times. Basic medical visits are also covered, while dental care, medical procedures, and prescriptions are offered at extra cost. Some travelers look at extended cruises as the experience of a lifetime; for others, it is not a good fit. If travelers commonly get motion sickness, an extended boat trip is surely not the best option. Although travelers can rely on motion sickness medication, during such a long trip it may prove difficult. Concurrently, the appeal of life on the sea is clear since there is so much opportunity to explore new places and things.
Passengers of the supposed trip of a lifetime have since attempted to obtain refunds. There have even been some efforts to establish a formal criminal complaint on behalf of the passengers. Well into the beginning of 2024, the majority of passengers had not received their money back. Some aspects of the Life at Sea cruise are not included in the fare, which is the case with many voyages. Prices do not include items such as shore excursions, spa services, alcohol served outside of dinner, permanent office space, medical procedures and medications, and some seasonal onboard premium services. Before sailing for Life at Sea, the 1,074-guest vessel is also set to receive a first-of-its-kind business center that features two meeting rooms, 14 offices, business library, relaxing lounge and café.
Since three years is a long time, guests can bring friends and family onboard. There will be no added costs and they can stay in the guest’s stateroom while they are away, in a separate guest room or can simply use the roll-in bedding in the guest’s room. It will also offer fun sporting events and host movie nights where you can take part and make friends for a lifetime with like-minded people. The company said that anyone requesting a refund will get one, and that it will reimburse travel expenses related to the cruise.
When the cruise missed its planned departure date, the company promised to resolve lingering issues. Those customers are now scrambling to make new plans for where they will live for the next three years — and to extract refunds from the cruise line. The intense fallout is drawing comparisons to infamous debacles such as the Fyre Festival — the "luxury" music festival that was more like a "disaster relief area." The original itinerary was supposed to last 1,095 days, starting from Istanbul and Europe and then heading to South America and the Caribbean. The voyage would continue through the Panama Canal before visiting the U.S.

Miray Cruises made waves when it announced the 3-year Life at Sea Cruises world voyage on February 27, 2023. In an era of highly sought-after world cruises, this news created a tsunami of excitement and subsequent booking requests. The cruise seemed ideal for a post-pandemic era, targeting people longing for an escape. With fares starting at $90,000 for an inside cabin and going up to $975,000 for a suite, the trip even seemed like a bargain to some prospective passengers, cheaper than living three years in many cities.
